Pathology

Case #1 - an eleven physician pathology group receiving all their hospital-based information on paper approached EDI Solutions to automate the electronic collection of hospital data. In addition to eliminating the need to manually key high volumes of hospital data, unique screen capture technologies were also deployed that allowed the pathology group to bill for charges that were previously un-billable.

"The EDIS System was designed around how we do business. Because of the nature of our clinical business (high volume transactions and lower profit margins), the EDIS hospital interfaces have virtually eliminated any manual data entry. Our overall data entry costs have been reduced by sixty-six percent. In addition to the reduction of data entry costs, we are now billing for two new hospitals."

Case #2 - a twenty-two physician pathology group had been in discussion with a hospital IT department for almost two years trying to work out a diagnostic reports interface for outpatient services. The pathology group wanted to send outpatient diagnostic reports to the hospital system and then have the results available via the hospital EMR system. The hospital information system (HIS) provides broad EMR access to a large physician community. The HIS system is a single gateway that extends to multiple area hospitals and has existing interfaces with several medical groups supporting multiple standalone EMR systems. Due to an incompatible data element issue in the HIS and pathology Lab Information System (LIS), the hospital’s final recommendation was for the pathology group to start entering case information in the hospital's LIS system and cease using the pathology group's laboratory system to enter the case information.  Instead, the pathology group continued entering case information into their own LIS system (business as usual) and EDIS created an interface that got all their reports reports into the hospital's EMR system.

"Getting this interface up and working was critical to our ability to deliver laboratory results to our broader physician community. We are grateful to EDI Solutions for stepping in and making this interface work. We were very pleased that we didn't have to change the way we did business. We were also able secure key physician accounts because of priority delivery protocols that EDIS worked into their delivery system."
